San Marino, world's worst football team, finally wins a game at UEFA Nations League

San Marino, regarded as the world's worst football team according to FIFA rankings, won its first-ever competitive international game by defeating Liechtenstein 1-0 on Thursday in the UEFA Nations League. This historic victory was secured with a goal by Nicko Sensoli in the 53rd minute. San Marino is ranked last at No. 210, while Liechtenstein is slightly better at No. 199.

In the first half, Liechtenstein appeared to score, but their goal was disallowed for offside after a close decision. San Marino capitalized on a defensive error in the 53rd minute, allowing 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli to score the decisive goal.


San Marino had been showing signs of improvement in recent years, managing draws in friendly matches against Seychelles, Saint Lucia, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. However, this win marks their first competitive victory, ending a lengthy streak of defeats.

San Marino's only other success came in their 69th game, a 1-0 win over Liechtenstein in a 2004 friendly.

Before this game, the fans had endured 140 matches without a win, and Sensoli's goal sparked wild celebrations at the San Marino stadium.

The victory came in Group D1 of the competition. San Marino plays in League D, Group 1 of the UEFA Nations League, alongside Liechtenstein and Gibraltar.This win not only marks a historic achievement for San Marino but also offers hope for the nation’s future success on the international stage.
