Spurs' Predicted Lineup & Tactics Against Brentford - Ange's 4-3-3 Formation

1 min read

In the aftermath of a hard-fought victory over Coventry City in the EFL Cup, Spurs return to Premier League action against Brentford in a London derby this Saturday. Manager Ange Postecoglou will be looking to secure a much-needed win and avoid a third defeat in five league games. Despite their unconvincing form, Postecoglou’s commitment to his brand of attacking football remains steadfast and we don’t expect to see any drastical tactical changes soon.

Defensive Setup:

In goal, Guglielmo Vicario is expected to retain his spot, continuing to grow into his role. The back four will likely see Pedro Porro at right-back, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven forming the central defensive partnership. Despite his half-time substitution against Coventry, Destiny Udogie is expected to feature at left-back after Postecoglou confirmed it was a planned move.

Midfield Trio:

Postecoglou’s 4-3-3 setup thrives on a dynamic midfield, and Spurs will likely line up with Rodrigo Bentancur in a deep-lying role. Having recently returned from injury, Bentancur’s distribution and ability to link defense and attack will be key. James Maddison is set to take up an advanced role as the creative playmaker, while Yves Bissouma, if fit after his recent groin issue, will add physicality and ball-winning ability in the center of the park. The midfield combination and the form of players like Maddison has been poor so far which is causing Spurs’ attacking threat to be blunt and docile.

Forward Line:

The attacking trio presents some challenges for Tottenham due to injuries. Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner were forced off midweek, and while Werner may still be available, his poor showing likely means Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski will battle for the right wing spot. Johnson’s goal in the EFL Cup should boost his confidence, and Kulusevski’s energy on the right wing will be crucial to Spurs’ offensive movements, so probably the Swede will get the nod. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min, Tottenham’s talisman, will start in his favoured left wing attacking position along with Solanke as the striker.

Predicted Lineup:

Formation: 4-3-3

  • GK: Guglielmo Vicario

  • RB: Pedro Porro

  • CB: Cristian Romero

  • CB: Micky van de Ven

  • LB: Destiny Udogie

  • CM: Yves Bissouma

  • CM: Rodrigo Bentancur

  • AM: James Maddison

  • RW: Dejan Kulusevski

  • LW: Son Heung-min

  • ST: Dominic Solanke

Tactical Focus:

Tottenham must sharpen their attacking decision-making. Despite dominating possession in recent games, Spurs have struggled to turn control into clear-cut chances. Postecoglou will rely heavily on Maddison’s creativity to break down Brentford’s well-organized defense. Brentford, on the other hand, will be content to sit back and look for opportunities to counter, especially with Tottenham’s tendency to leave gaps when pushing forward.

Tottenham must find consistency if they are to climb the Premier League table. With key players returning and a 4-3-3 formation that encourages attacking football, Postecoglou will be eager to put the disappointment of their recent performances behind them. However, Brentford is no pushover, and Tottenham will need to be at their best to secure a positive result.
