Mercedes-Benz has launched the highly anticipated G 580 Edition One in India at a price of Rs 3 crore (ex-showroom).
Officially called the G 580 with EQ Technology, this electric version of the iconic G-Class will be sold alongside the facelifted AMG G 63 (Rs 3.64 crore).
The G 580 retains the classic G-Class boxy design, specifically resembling the G 450d.
Apart from the EQ badges, the G 580 features a partially raised bonnet with air curtains, a redesigned A-pillar, and a roof spoiler for improved aerodynamics and reduced cabin noise.
The rear wheel-arch flares also include air curtains for better efficiency. The LED lights outlining the front give the EQG a unique appearance.
Mercedes has improved the car’s drag coefficient, bringing it down to 0.44 from the G 450d’s 0.48. As an electric vehicle (EV), the G 580 swaps the traditional spare wheel with a holder for the charging cable.
Inside, the G 580 feels very much like the classic G-Class, with only a few changes to accommodate the EV.
The MBUX multimedia system, featuring twin 12.3-inch screens (one for the driver and one for infotainment), remains unchanged. The G 580 also gets adaptive cruise control via a steering wheel button.
The G 580 is powered by a 116kWh battery, identical to the EQS but stored differently. It supports charging speeds of up to 200kW and has a claimed range of 473 km (WLTP cycle).
A fast charger can recharge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 32 minutes. Also, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 180 km/h.
