IPL 2025: BCCI lifts ban on use of saliva to shine the ball

1 min read

The BCCI Thursday lifted the use of saliva to shine the ball in IPL 2025 after majority of captains agreed to its proposal. The decision was taken at the captains' meeting in Mumbai.

"The Saliva ban has been lifted. Majority of captains were in favour of the move," a top BCCI official told PTI.

The use of saliva was an age-old practice to shine the ball and was banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as a precautionary measure during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ban was made permanent in 2022.
Till the 2024 season, IPL followed ICC's ban in its playing conditions in the aftermath of the pandemic but its guidelines are outside the purview of the world governing body.

IPL is now the first major cricket league or tournament to re-introduce the use of saliva after the COVID-19 pandemic.
