IPL 2025: KKR vs RCB, Match 1

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2025 tournament opener at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The inaugural game of the tournament was played on Saturday, March 22. Newly appointed RCB skipper won the toss and asked the KKR to bat first.


Batting first, the hosts posted a decent total of 174 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs courtesy of Sunil Narine and Ajinkya Rahane’s knocks of 44 and 56 runs, respectively. Following these two, young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi also scored 30 runs off 22 balls, with two fours and a six. Krunal Pandya and Josh Hazlewood scalped 3 and 2 wickets, respectively, alongside a wicket each bagged by Yash Dayal, Rasikh Salam, and Suyash Sharma.


While chasing the target, RCB chased it down comfortably in just 16.2 overs, scoring 177 runs for the loss of just 3 wickets. Openers, Phil Salt and Virat Kohli played blistering half-century knocks, scoring 56 and 59 runs, off just 31 and 36 balls, respectively.  On the back of these knocks, RCB managed to register a 7-wicket win in the tournament opener.

Former RCB skipper and batting stalwart, Virat Kohli is now at the top of the ‘leading run-scorers’ of IPL 2025. He played a blistering and unbeaten knock of 59 runs off just 36 balls, with 4 fours and three sixes against KKR in the first game.


Following him is the KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 56 runs off just 31 balls, with six fours and four sixes. RCB opener and Kohli’s opening partner, Phil Salt at the third spot, with 56 runs off 31 balls against KKR followed by KKR all-rounder Sunil Narine and RCB skipper Rajat Patidar at four and five.
