Kohli-Salt fifties power RCB to comfortable 7-wickets win over KKR in IPL 2025 opener

India's legendary batter Virat Kohli stitched together a match-defining partnership with Phil Salt, as both scored fifties to help Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) secure a comprehensive 7-wickets victory over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2025 opener on Saturday.

The world's most expensive cricket tournament kicked off with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders setting a target of 175 for Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

KKR had a shaky start to the 18th edition of the IPL, losing opener Quinton de Kock in the very first over for just four runs, courtesy of a sharp delivery from right-arm pacer Josh Hazlewood.

However, skipper Ajinkya Rahane joined Sunil Narine in the middle, and the duo counterattacked, taking the team past the 50-run mark in just six overs. Rahane led from the front with a fluent 56 off 31 balls, stitching a crucial 103-run partnership with Narine, who contributed a fiery 44 off 26 deliveries.

At one point, KKR seemed poised to breach the 200-run mark, but RCB's disciplined bowling restricted them to a modest 174/8 in the tournament opener at Eden Gardens.
